REAL ID Deadline Looms
The federal deadline for REAL ID is now fewer than five months away.
Minnesotans will not be able to use a standard driver’s license to board a plane within the United States or visit some federal buildings after May 7, 2025.
The Minnesota Department of Public Safety says applying ahead of the deadline can help you avoid potential long lines and wait times.
Driver and Vehicle Services Director Pong Xiong says you only really need three documents and your social security number for the REAL ID compliant license.
To prove identity, date of birth and legal presence in the U.S., you can use your passport, birth certificate or permanent resident card. To prove Minnesota residency, you’ll need to provide a valid driver’s license, bank statement, utility bill or tax return. According to DVS, the three most common documents Minnesotans use to apply are a birth certificate, bank statement and utility bill.
Make sure all documents are original, you’ll need to present the originals even if you pre-apply and upload your documents in advance. DVS can’t accept photocopies, laminated documents or scanned, faxed or digital images. However, if your utility bills are all online, you can print out a bill and use it as proof of residence.
The name on the documents matches the name on your application. If not, you’ll need additional documentation. You can find a complete list on the REAL ID page of the Department of Public Safety website.
