States looking at Speed Limit rules
( ABC News) A recent spike in road deaths has the Federal Highway Administration looking at speed limits. Its first update since 2009 questions the longstanding unofficial rule that sets the limit at the 85th percentile of what drivers actually drive on a given highway. Transportation officials say that causes a feedback loop — people speed, and the limits get raised higher. The new guidance suggests states consider danger to pedestrians and the frequency of crashes. Madison, Wisconsin this summer lowered local limits from 25 to 20. A similar move in Seattle brought a noticeable decline in serious injury crashes and speeding. On the other hand North Dakota just became the ninth state to hit the accelerator, this summer pushing the gas to 80. In Texas, you can drive as high as 85.
