Testimony Resumes in Senator Mitchell’s Burglary Trial
(Learfield News/Detroit Lakes, MN) — Testimony continues today (Wed) in Becker County in the burglary trial of state Senator Nicole Mitchell of Woodbury.
Jurors were shown officer body cam footage Tuesday from Mitchell’s arrest after the April 2024 break-in at her stepmother’s home in Detroit Lakes. She tells police, “I just wanted to get a couple of my dad’s mementos, and that’s all.” Mitchell says she was trying to retrieve a few personal items – including photos, a flannel shirt, and some of her late father’s ashes.
Her stepmother claimed on the witness stand that Nicole was there to steal important documents and money, but reporters say she appeared confused and couldn’t remember some details.
Mitchell’s defense attorney argued she went there to check on her stepmother because her Alzheimer’s disease symptoms were worsening.
