Annual Permit to Carry Report Released
Officials say that fewer permits to carry firearms were issued last year in Minnesota than in 2023.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension released their annual Permit to Carry Report Monday. It says the state issued 57,248 permits in 2024, down from the 65,215 issued in 2023.
The BCA says sheriffs reported 198 permits were suspended, 47 were revoked, 1,545 were voided and 783 were denied in 2024.
According to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, Department of Public Safety individuals with permits committed 5,340 crimes in 2024. This is the highest number since the state’s Personal Protection Act was enacted, but the percentage of permit holders who committed a crime, 1 percent, was consistent with recent years. Around 54 percent were DWIs or other traffic offenses. Fewer than 3 percent were crimes where firearms were used in furtherance of a crime.
The total number of valid permits in Minnesota currently sits at 408,356.
