Gary Schmidt

Gary Schmidt, of Belle Plaine, passed away on Monday, May 20, 2024, at St. Gertrude’s in Shakopee. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, at Trinity Ev. Lutheran Church in Belle Plaine. Visitation will be from 9-11 a.m. at church prior to the service. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Belle Plaine.

Gary was born in New Prague on November 22, 1945, to Earl H. and Eldora (Woestehoff) Schmidt. He grew up in San Francisco Township in Carver County and graduated from Belle Plaine High School in 1963. On January 9, 1966, he married Nella Schuette at Trinity Lutheran in Belle Plaine. They farmed for many years on his family farm as well as driving truck for Schmidt Ready Mix and later Cemstone. Gary, in his younger years, enjoyed playing softball and bowling. He had a lifelong joy of traveling, fishing, gardening, and listening to polka music. He also enjoyed going to his grandchildren's sporting events.

Gary is survived by his sons, Steve (Sheila), Scott (Karla), and Terry (Jenny). Grandchildren, Tylor (Robert), Sabrina Schaefer (Jesse Nelson), Jacob (Becky Johnson), Mikkel, Josie, Brody (Jessica Barclay), Mason, Elizabeth (Joey Hein) and Morgan. Great Grandchildren, Orion, Cloud, Luna Nelson, and Norman Schmidt. Brother, Glenn (Heidi) Schmidt, Sisters, Linda (Greg) Schwichtenberg, and Sandi (Kevin) Wolpern. Brother-in-law Jon (Peggy) Schuette and Sister-in-law Jane Schuette. Many nieces and nephews. Gary will be missed by his special friend Jeanne Marnoff.

He is preceded in death by his parents, wife Nella, grandson Derrick, granddaughter Rosa, brothers-in-law Willmar “Butch,” Craig, and sister-in-law Betty Ann Schuette.
