Gopher update on Hockey, Basketball and Spring Stuff
(Seattle, WA/Minnesota News Network) — Cade Tyson had team-high totals of 22 points, nine rebounds, and three steals, Bobby Durkin had 13 points, and Isaac Asuma added 11 for the Gophers, but Washington (13-13, 5-10 Big Ten) shot a season-high 63 percent and used an extended 23-4 run to snap a three-game losing streak with a 69-57 win versus Minnesota (11-14, 4-10 Big Ten) at Alaska Airlines Arena. Minnesota, which was playing without starting forward Jaylen Crocker-Johnson, led 26-25 with 4:46 remaining in the first half, but the Huskies outscored the Gophers 14-0 to close the half and then extended the run to 23-4 early in the second half to build a 48-30 lead. Minnesota twice cut UW’s lead to 11 points, but that’s as close as the shorthanded Gophers were able to get in dropping their second game in a row. The two game trip concludes on Tuesday night as they face Oregon for a 9:30 P-M tip in Eugene, OR.
(Madison, WI/Minnesota News Network) — Mara Braun scored 20 points to help lead the Minnesota women’s basketball team (20-6, 11-4 Big Ten) past the Wisconsin Badgers (13-13, 5-10 Big Ten) 83-60 on the road Sunday. The Golden Gophers had four players score in double figures, led by Braun, who had 20 points. Amaya Battle tacked on 17 points and Sophie Hart helped out with 13 points and six rebounds. Tori McKinney had 12 points and matched her career high with five steals. Minnesota out-rebounded Wisconsin 29-26 in Sunday’s game, paced by six boards from Hart. The Gophers also grabbed 10 offensive rebounds and scored 17 second chance points. The Gophers return home on Wednesday evening for a 7 P-M tip against Ohio State at Williams Arena.
(undated/Minnesota News Network) — The Gopher men’s hockey team saw Notre Dame score twice in the final 10 minutes as they fell on Saturday night to the Fighting Irish 3-2 in South Bend, IN. The Gophers lead 2-1 on goals by Cal Thomas and Javon Moore but the Irish pulled even at 10:17 of the third period and the got their first lead of the game with :51 seconds to play and skated to the win. Notre Dame also scored twice in the third on Friday night to force overtime but the Gophers ended up winning via a shootout. Minnesota travels to Michigan this week for a two game set on Thursday and Friday from Ann Arbor. Elsewhere this weekend, in the N-C-H-C, St. Cloud State skated to a split with Colorado College including an overtime win on Friday night. In the C-C-H-A, Minnesota State and Bemidji State split a pair in Mankato. Augustana also settled for a split against Bowling Green. In the W-C-H-A, the Gopher women dropped a pair on the road to No. 2 Ohio State. Next weekend they’ll host U-M-D for a pair at Ridder Arena. The Bulldogs will be coming in off back to back 3-0 shutout wins over St. Thomas in Duluth. Meanwhile, S-C-S-U swept Bemidji State and Minnesota State dropped a pair of home games to Wisconsin.
(Deland, FL/Minnesota News Network) — The University of Minnesota baseball team closed out their three game opening weekend against Ball State University this morning, taking down the Cardinals 8-0 and securing the program’s first opening weekend series sweep since 2014. Marcus Kruzan, Adam Urban and Brandon Jaenke combined for the four hit shutout. Kruzan started on the mound, going five shutout innings and striking out five. Urban dealt out of the bullpen, going three shutout innings and striking out five. The Gophers are back in Florida for a match up against Florida Golf Coast on Wednesday at 5:30 P-M.
(Las Cruces, NM/Minnesota News Network) — The Minnesota Golden Gophers got a big game from Scarlett Kuhn, who recorded two extra base hits in a 5-3 loss to the New Mexico State Aggies Sunday. Natalie Susa (0-1) got the ball to start for Minnesota (4-5) and took the loss. Sydney Schwartz was a bright spot for the Golden Gophers, coming out of the bullpen and throwing three innings, giving up one run on two hits, with two walks and five strikeouts. Kuhn’s two extra base hits were the highlight of a 2-for-3 day, and included two doubles. Tara Wolocko put together a standout performance at the dish as well, going 1-for-4 with a home run and two R-B-I’s. Tinley Easton also helped out for the Golden Gophers, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding a home run and an R-B-I. Next up, the Gophers will host for the first time in 2026, welcoming teams to the Gopher Indoor Classic at U.S. Bank Stadium. It starts on Friday and runs through the weekend with games against L-I-U, North Dakota State, Iowa State and Central Michigan (twice).
