Gopher Weekend Roundup-BB, WR, Hockey, Softball

(Minneapolis, MN) — The University of Minnesota women’s basketball team got 16 points from junior guard Amaya Battle of Hopkins and beat Indiana yesterday at Williams Arena 66-56. Battle also reached 1000-points in her career with the 16 points. She added seven rebounds and five assists. The Golden Gophers were strong in the middle of the game, outscoring the visiting Hoosiers 16-10 in the second quarter and 21-14 in the third. Junior forward Mallory Heyer of Chaska contributed with a ten-point, 13-rebound double-double, while senior center Sophie Hart of Farmington had 14 points and eight rebounds. Minnesota is now 19-6 overall and 7-6 in the Big Ten. Indiana dipped to 15-8 overall and 7-5 in the conference. The Gophers will visit nationally-ranked Ohio State on Thursday night at 6:30 P-M.

(Minneapolis, MN) — The Golden Gopher men’s basketball team couldn’t keep up with the number-25 Illinois Fighting Illini during a 95-74 loss at Williams Arena on Saturday. The Gophers were outscored by double-digits in each half. Lu’Cye (luh-KYE) Patterson scored 24 points in the losing effort, while Femi Odukale chipped in with 22. Minnesota is tied for 15th place in the Big Ten with a 4-and-9 conference record and a 12-and-12 mark overall. The Gophers visit U-S-C on Saturday at 3 P-M.

(Minneapolis, MN) — University of Minnesota star heavyweight Gable Steveson of Apple Valley cruised to a first period technical fall 18-3 and the seventh-ranked Gophers whipped Purdue 35-6 at a Big Ten dual yesterday at Maturi Pavilion. Steveson improved to 10-0 this season and to 95-2 in his career. Reigning U-F-C Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones sat with the Gopher coaches during the Steveson match. Minnesota is now 10-1 overall and 6-1 in the Big Ten. The visiting Boilermakers fell to 9-5 overall and 2-4 in the conference. The Golden Gophers will host number-two Iowa on Friday night at 8 P-M.

(Tempe, AZ) — The Golden Gopher softball team wrapped up its four-game weekend tournament with a 9-8 loss to Utah yesterday in Tempe, Arizona. Minnesota lost a pair of games on Friday to Utah and Cal before earning its first win of the season on Saturday against Miami (OH). The Gophers are 1-3 and are scheduled to play five games this weekend in Boca Raton, Florida. The competition will include North Carolina State, Louisville, Villanova, and Florida Atlantic.

(Madison, WI) — The third-ranked Golden Gopher women’s hockey team lost at top-ranked Wisconsin 6-1 yesterday afternoon in Madison. The Gophers were swept both games on the weekend and dipped to 22-8-and-1 overall and 16-7-and-1 in the W-C-H-A. The host Badgers improved to 29-1-and-2 overall and 23-1-and-2 in the league. Minnesota will host St. Cloud State on Friday and Saturday.
