Gopher Weekend update

(Minneapolis, MN) — The University of Minnesota women’s basketball team (19-8, 7-8 B1G) fell to the Oregon Ducks (18-8, 9-6 B1G) 76-70 at home Sunday afternoon. The Golden Gophers had four players score in double figures, led by Grace Groholski who had who had 16 points and four assists. Sophie Hart tacked on 15 points and six rebounds and Amaya Battle chipped in as well with 14 points and six assists. Minnesota shared the ball well in Sunday’s game, racking up 17 assists on 27 made field goals. Battle’s six assists paced the Gophers and Grocholski also helped out with four assists of her own. Minnesota has now lost five of their last six and will head to Purdue to face the Boilermakers on Wednesday night at 6 P-M.

(Los Angeles, CA) — Lu’Cye Patterson scored a season-high 25 points, including 19 in the decisive second half, and Frank Mitchell recorded his first double-double of the season with 15 points and 12 rebounds to allow Minnesota (13-12, 5-9 Big Ten) to rally from a 14-point first-half deficit and defeat U-S-C (14-11, 6-8 B1G) 69-66 at Galen Center. Patterson scored 24 points last Saturday versus No. 23 Illinois, and he willed the Gophers back into this one by finishing the game 6-of-16 from the field, including a pair of three-pointers, and going 11-for-13 at the free throw line. He added three rebounds, three steals, and two assists in 34 minutes. Mitchell came off the bench for his double-double. He was 7-of-9 from the field and finished with season-highs in both points (15) and rebounds (12) in just 20 minutes. The Gophers will stay in California as they get ready for a 9:30 P-M tip on Tuesday against U-C-L-A.

(undated) — The Golden Gophers suffered a pair of tough losses this weekend as fell twice on the road to Michigan. Friday night they lost in overtime then it happened again on Saturday but this time in was a shootout loss. That puts the Gophers at 21-7-4 on the season and 12-5-3 in the Big Ten. They’re home against Ohio State this weekend. In the N-C-H-C this weekend, the Bulldogs beat Arizona State in overtime on Friday night but fell in the shootout in the rematch. In the C-C-H-A, Augustana thumped Michigan Tech on Friday night but skated to a tie in the rematch. And in the W-C-H-A, Minnesota Duluth swept a pair from Minnesota State, the Gophers and St. Cloud State split a home and home with the visitor each winning in the away barn. St. Thomas and Bemidji State also split the weekend

(Houston, TX) — The Minnesota Golden Gophers fell 8-7 to the Houston Cougars on Sunday afternoon. Drew Berkland led the Gopher offense with two hits and four R-B-I. Josh Fitzgerald, Jake Elbeery and Charlie Sutherland also chipped in two hits. Sutherland hit a lead off home run in the top of the third to get the Gopher offense going. Justin Thorsteinson got the start on the mound and threw 3.1 innings, striking out seven. The Gophers are back in action Feb. 21-23 at the Round Rock Classic in Round Rock, Texas. There they will take on Oklahoma, No.2 Virginia, and No.7 Oregon State.

(Boca Raton, FL) — Junior Sydney Schwartz was dealing on Sunday, tossing a shutout to lead the Minnesota Golden Gophers past the North Carolina State Wolfpack 2-0. Schwartz (1-4) went the distance for Minnesota, giving up seven hits, walking one and striking out eight. Offensively, the Gophers were led by Schwartz, who went 1-for-3 on the day with an R-B-I. The ‘U’ will have a few days off before heading to California for the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic. They will face Fresno State, Missouri, Duke, Tennessee, and Long Beach State.

(Columbus, OH) — No. 16 Minnesota earned its third road win of the season with a 197.375-195.800 victory over No. 20 Ohio State Sunday afternoon at the Covelli Center. The score was a season-best for Minnesota, topping the 197.325 score on Jan. 26 at Iowa. The Gophers (6-1, 4-1 B1G) earned 49.375 on vault, 49.175 on bars, 49.375 on beam and 49.450 on floor. Ohio State (2-6, 1-4 B1G) went 49.050 on vault, 48.625 on bars, 48.825 on beam and 49.300 on the floor. Up next, the Gophers will host Nebraska next Saturday at 4 P-M.
