Gopher Womens BB Comeback falls short

(College Park, MD) — The 24th-ranked Golden Gopher women’s basketball team lost at number-eight Maryland last night 99-92 in a hard fought game. Minnesota held the lead after one quarter of play 19-17 before trailing at the half 42-27. The host Terrapins looked like they had put the game away in the fourth quarter, leading by 20 points with 2:59 to play. But, the Gophers scored 16 straight points to cut the lead to 95-92 with 20-seconds remaining. Maryland made free throws late to seal the game and improve to 16-1 overall and 6-1 in the Big Ten. The Golden Gophers dipped to 16-2 overall and 4-2 in the conference. Four Minnesota players scored in double figures, led by 19 points from junior guard Amaya Battle of Hopkins. Sophomore Grace Grocholski scored 16 points, while junior Mallory Heyer of Chaska chipped in with 15. Senior center Sophie Hart of Farmington scored 14 points and grabbed nine rebounds. The Gophers will play at Northwestern on Sunday at 2 P-M. Meanwhile, the Gopher men will host Michigan tomorrow night at 6 P-M at Williams Arena.
