Gopher Womens BB, Softball both lose — Baseball wins
(Minneapolis, MN/Minnesota News Network) – – The 23rd-ranked Golden Gopher women’s basketball team saw its nine-game winning streak snapped with a 75-61 loss at home last night to number-16 Michigan State. Minnesota was outscored 41-25 in the second half after leading by as many ten points in the second quarter. In fact, they had an early eight-point lead in the third quarter before the visiting Spartans went on a 28-7 run to take a 13-point lead early in the fourth quarter. The Gophers shot just 33-percent from the floor, including 27-percent from three-point range. Sophomore guard Tori McKinney led the way for Minnesota with 29 of the team’s 61 points. Two of the top Minnesota players Grace Grocholski and Mara Braun combined to shoot 3-for-22 overall and 1-for 12 from distance. The Gophers dipped to 21-7 overall and 12-5 in the Big Ten. Michigan State is now 22-6 overall and 11-6 in the conference. The Gophers visit Illinois to close out the regular season on Sunday. Meanwhile, the Gopher men’s team beat Rutgers on Saturday 80-61 and will take on Michigan tomorrow night in Ann Arbor at 7:30 P-M.
(Minneapolis, MN/Minnesota News Network) — The University of Minnesota softball team lost to Central Michigan 5-3 at U-S Bank Stadium yesterday to wrap up the five-team, 12-game Gopher Indoor Classic. Minnesota junior catcher Tara Wolocko drove home two runs. The Golden Gophers held a lead after The Gophers dipped to 6-9 overall with the setback and will play five games in Arizona this coming weekend.
(Fort Myers, FL/Minnesota News Network) — The Golden Gopher baseball team smashed Northeastern 15-5 in seven innings yesterday in Fort Myers, improving to 5-1 on the year. The Golden Gophers outscored the Huskies 27-7 in two wins over the weekend in the Sunshine State. Minnesota first baseman Jack Bello hit a grand slam in yesterday’s win, going 2-for-4 with five R-B-I. The Gophers will host Kansas on Wednesday night at U-S Bank Stadium at 6 P-M.
