Grisham’s Two Homers Power Yankees Past Twins, 10-5
MINNEAPOLIS, MN — Trent Grisham crushed two home runs and Cody Bellinger added a late blast as the New York Yankees defeated the Minnesota Twins 10-5 on Wednesday night.
Aaron Judge continued his stellar season, going 3-for-4 to raise his MLB-best batting average to .329. With the win, the Yankees moved within four games of AL East-leading Toronto.
Luis Gil started for New York, lasting 4 2/3 innings and giving up five runs (four earned) on nine hits. The Yankees’ bullpen was sharp, as four relievers combined to hold the Twins scoreless the rest of the way. Fernando Cruz (3-4) recorded four key outs to earn the win.
Grisham tied the game in the third inning with a solo shot off Twins starter Taj Bradley (6-8). One inning later, he struck again — this time launching a three-run homer, his 33rd of the season, to give the Yankees a 6-2 lead.
Minnesota rallied in the fifth with a three-run inning, highlighted by Brooks Lee’s clutch two-out, two-run single. Lee finished with three hits on the night, while teammates Austin Martin and Royce Lewis each collected two hits.
In a critical moment later that inning, with two runners on and the Twins threatening to tie, Yankees manager Aaron Boone turned to Cruz out of the bullpen. Lewis drilled a line drive to right-center, but Bellinger made a sprinting catch to preserve the 7-5 lead.
Bellinger would later add insurance with a two-run homer in the ninth.
The four earned runs allowed by Gil matched the total he had surrendered over his previous four starts combined (22 1/3 innings).
