JUDGE TO RULE ON MURDER SUSPECT’S MENTAL COMPETENCY

A judge in Kandiyohi County is considering a mental competency examination for 26-year-old murder suspect Ameer Musa Matariyeh from Minneapolis.  His attorney argues that a Rule 20 exam could shed light on his mental state, as Matariyeh is prescribed medication for schizophrenia.  However, the county attorney opposes this, stating he has not shown any concering behavior.  Matariyeh faces multiple charges from an October incident involving the shooting of two individuals and an attempted carjacking near Willmar in October.  He is held on $3.5 million bail and has additional charges in Hennepin and Carver Counties.  A ruling on the competency examination is expected soon.
