Kody Clemens homers with dad Roger looking on, Twins beat Rays 4-2 to stop Rays’ 6-game win streak
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Kody Clemens homered for the fifth time this season with his father, seven-time Cy Young Award winner Roger Clemens, watching from the stands, helping the Minnesota Twins snap the Tampa Bay Rays’ six-game winning streak with a 4-2 victory on Tuesday night.
Clemens, 29, extended his career-best hitting streak to eight games by launching a solo shot off Rays starter Taj Bradley (4-4) to lead off the second inning.
Twins right-hander Joe Ryan (5-2) earned his fourth straight win, limiting the Rays to one run on five hits over six innings. Closer Jhoan Duran secured his ninth save in 10 opportunities, clocking six of his 21 pitches at 100 mph or faster while navigating around a walk in the ninth.
Carlos Correa led the Twins’ offense with three hits. Minnesota opened the scoring in the first on Brooks Lee’s sacrifice fly. Lee later added an RBI fielder’s choice in the sixth, and Kameron Misner contributed with a run-scoring groundout in the seventh.
Bradley pitched well despite the loss, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits across seven innings, matching his longest outing of the season.
The game drew 10,046 fans at Steinbrenner Field, marking the Rays’ 33rd sellout in 36 home games at their temporary venue this season. With the loss, Tampa Bay fell back to .500 at 27-27 and is now 17-19 at home entering Wednesday’s homestand finale.
A key miscue came in the sixth inning when Rays second baseman Brandon Lowe overthrew shortstop Jose Caballero while trying to turn a double play, allowing Ryan Jeffers to score from second.
Ryan’s lone walk of the night — issued to Misner in the second — was just his 10th in 11 starts this year. The Twins’ pitching staff continues to lead the majors in fewest walks allowed.
