Koi Perich’s Pick-Six Sparks Minnesota Comeback Win Over Purdue
MINNEAPOLIS, MN — Koi Perich’s fourth-quarter interception return for a touchdown proved to be the game-winner as Minnesota rallied to defeat Purdue 27-20 on Saturday.
Drake Lindsey passed for 232 yards and two touchdowns for the Golden Gophers (4-2, 2-1 Big Ten), who overcame early deficits of 10-0 and 20-13. The win marked a strong rebound after last week’s lopsided 42-3 loss to Ohio State.
“The way a team responds to that says a lot about their character,” Minnesota head coach P.J. Fleck said. “That was truly gutsy. It didn’t always go our way for a lot of reasons … but never once did I think we were out of that football game.”
Purdue quarterback Ryan Browne threw for 203 yards and added 61 yards and a touchdown on the ground. The Boilermakers (2-4, 0-3 Big Ten) dominated on the ground, outrushing Minnesota 253-30, but were undone by critical errors — four turnovers and nine penalties.
“They’re all crucial, and they all are magnified in those situations — on third down and in the red area,” said Purdue coach Barry Odom. “We’re not good enough to do those things and win games.”
Minnesota tied the game at 20 midway through the fourth quarter with a methodical 14-play, 70-yard drive, capped by Lindsey’s 4-yard touchdown pass to Jameson Geers. The drive was helped by two costly facemask penalties on Purdue.
On Purdue’s very next play from scrimmage, Perich — a standout sophomore safety who appeared on many preseason All-America watch lists — read Browne’s eyes and jumped the route for a 27-yard interception return touchdown.
“I read the QB’s eyes, and ultimately he threw it to me,” Perich said.
Still, Purdue nearly answered. Browne led the Boilermakers to the Gophers’ 5-yard line, but a holding penalty backed them up, and on fourth down, Jai’Onte’ McMillan broke up the pass at the goal line to preserve the win.
Myles Slusher had a strong defensive game for Purdue with six tackles, two pass breakups, and an interception. Despite that, the Boilermakers dropped their fourth straight game.
Takeaways:
- Purdue: The Boilermakers controlled the trenches and outgained Minnesota by nearly 200 yards, but three dropped passes, three interceptions (including a trick-play pick at the goal line), and a barrage of penalties cost them dearly.
- Minnesota: The return of top running back Darius Taylor was expected to boost the run game, but he has just 44 yards on 22 carries since coming back from injury. Still, the Gophers found a way to win with timely defense and clutch quarterback play.
