Marlins Blank Twins 2-0, Extend Win Streak to Eight Behind Stowers’ Homer and Cabrera’s Gem
MIAMI, FL — Kyle Stowers homered and Edward Cabrera delivered a dominant performance on the mound as the Miami Marlins edged the Minnesota Twins 2-0 Tuesday night, extending their winning streak to eight games — just one shy of the franchise record set in 2008.
Cabrera (3-2) was stellar, tossing seven scoreless innings while giving up only two hits and one walk. He struck out six, including Byron Buxton in the third inning for his 400th career strikeout, making him the third-fastest pitcher in Marlins history to reach that milestone.
Stowers opened the scoring in the second inning with his 14th home run of the season. Initially awarded first base after appearing to be hit by a pitch, the call was overturned on review — but Stowers quickly made up for it by launching one over the wall to put Miami up 1-0.
Relievers Anthony Bender and Ronny Henriquez closed out the game, with Bender pitching a perfect eighth and Henriquez striking out two to earn his fourth save.
Twins starter Joe Ryan (8-4) matched Cabrera inning for inning, allowing just one run and five hits across seven solid frames. Still, Minnesota was shut out for the second straight game — and the seventh time this season.
Miami added an insurance run in the eighth. Jesús Sánchez drove a ball deep to center, where Buxton made a leaping attempt at the wall but couldn’t haul it in. Sánchez reached third after the play was confirmed not to be a home run. Following an intentional walk to Otto Lopez, Nick Fortes ripped a single down the left-field line to give Miami a two-run cushion.
The shutout was the Marlins’ fifth of the season.
Up Next: Miami’s Janson Junk (2-0, 3.73 ERA) will take the mound Wednesday night to face the Twins for the first time in his career, squaring off against Simeon Woods Richardson (3-4, 4.63 ERA).
