Martha Marie Konietzko was born June 29, 1933, in Meeker County, Minnesota, to Carl and Elizabeth (Rick) Konietzko. She graduated from high school in Litchfield, Minnesota in 1951 and continued her education at St. Cloud Nursing School and was capped as a registered nurse in May 1954.
While completing her nursing degree Marty met John Anderson, a self-described “disorderly orderly.” Romance bloomed as Marty and John’s paths crossed at the St. Cloud Hospital — first serendipitously and then through efforts to meet routinely while tending to two patients who shared a room on the geriatric floor and needed help with their daily meals. Marty and John were engaged September 10, 1954 and married May 31, 1955. Marty and John’s 70-year loving marriage created a beautiful family: five children, six grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
Marty was a compassionate and skilled nurse. While always humble, Marty was quietly confident in her role as an RN. She helped establish the cardiac care unit at the (then) Stevens County Memorial Hospital in Morris and played a lead role in training the nursing staff to provide specialized care. Living just a block from the hospital, Marty was often called upon to cover shifts during wintery weather. A favorite family story is a snow plow picking Marty up for work during a particularly wicked blizzard.
Marty rarely sat idle. Even if she settled into watch TV by the woodstove on a winter night, her hands stayed busy. She sewed, quilted, knitted, and crocheted beautifully. Marty was also a good cook. Her kitchen was always well-stocked with canned produce from John’s garden, jam and jelly, bread, cookies, and more.
Marty is survived by her husband: John; children: Lynn (Ted) Freed, Patricia Anderson (Bernhard Jentner), Kristin (Steve) Anderson, John (Dona) Anderson, Carla Anderson (Karl Lutz); six grandchildren: Jennifer Freed, Katherine (Drew) Paris, Jacob (Holly) Beyer, John (Rebecca) Anderson, Rachel (Matthew) Lentner, and Wyatt Anderson, seven great grandchildren: Jack, Crosby, and Elizabeth Paris; Maddie and Grace Beyer; John and Mariah Anderson.
Marty lived a long life and is proceeded in death by many family members and dear friends. May she feel peace and joy as she reunites with them, especially her parents Liz and Carl and her brother Carlton who died as an infant.
In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials to Feed My Starving Children, Operation Smile or charity of your choice.
The Anderson family would like to thank the staff at West Wind Village for the loving care Marty received over the years.
Arrangements are with the Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris, MN.
