Minnesota AG Ellison’s Tariff Challenge Reaches U.S. Supreme Court
(Washington, D.C.) — Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison is among a coalition of 12 states appearing before the U.S. Supreme Court today to challenge President Donald Trump’s use of emergency powers to impose sweeping tariffs. The lawsuit argues Trump overstepped his authority under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), bypassing Congress’s constitutional role in setting trade policy. The case could redefine executive limits on economic decisions. Filed in April by Minnesota and 11 other states, the suit targets tariffs affecting imports from Canada, Mexico, China, and others. Lower courts sided with the states, ruling the tariffs unlawful. The federal government appealed, and the Supreme Court agreed to an expedited review.
