NEW ULM MAN FOUND WITH GUNS AND METH DURING TRAFFIC STOP
A New Ulm man faces five charges including two felonies after a traffic stop near Winthrop Sunday. Winthrop police stopped 32-year-old Brett Matthew Zangel and noticed a hypodermic needle in his pocket. Court records say that Zangel told police he was carrying a pistol and wasn’t legally allowed to do so. Police searched the vehicle and found a baggie containing a substance that tested positive for methamphamine. Police also found a 10-gauge shotgun, two 12-gauge shotguns with 51 shells, a 410-shotgun with 24 shells and 114 rounds of 9mm ammunition. Court documents say Zangel was arrested and a search warrant was obtained and executed for a sample of his blood. His license also came back revoked. He has previous burglary and DWI convictions. Zangel is being held in the Sibley County Jail on charges of unlawful possession of a firearm or ammunition and fifth-degree possession of a controlled substance, gross misdemeanor second-degree DWI, gross misdemeanor driving after revocation and misdemeanor open bottle. His bail was set at $750,000 unconditional, $200,000 with conditions. An omnibus hearing was scheduled for November 20.
