Red Sox Top Twins 8-5 Behind Story’s Big Night and Giolito’s Solid Start

MINNEAPOLIS, MN — Trevor Story had a standout performance Tuesday night, hitting a home run and a double while driving in three runs to lead the Boston Red Sox past the Minnesota Twins, 8-5.

Lucas Giolito (7-2) delivered a strong outing on the mound, allowing just one run over six innings. He gave up five hits and two walks while striking out five.

Jarren Duran added to Boston’s offense with a home run and a double of his own, also swiping a base in the win.

For the Twins, rookie Brooks Lee provided nearly all the offense, launching two home runs and collecting all five of Minnesota’s RBIs. Lee entered the game in the third inning, replacing Carlos Correa, who exited due to a migraine.

Lee’s second homer, a two-run blast off former teammate Jorge Alcala in the ninth, trimmed Boston’s lead to 8-5. But with two outs and a runner on, Red Sox closer Aroldis Chapman came in and struck out Mickey Gasper on just three pitches to earn his 19th save.

Twins rookie Pierson Ohl (0-1), making his MLB debut, pitched two scoreless innings before Boston broke through with a four-run third. Ceddanne Rafaela tripled and scored on Roman Anthony’s single. Alex Bregman followed with a double, and a fielding miscue by left fielder Willi Castro allowed another run to score. After striking out Duran, Ohl couldn’t escape the inning, surrendering a two-run homer to Story that made it 4-0.

Duran later added a solo home run off reliever Michael Tonkin in the fifth.

Ohl was one strike away from escaping the third with only a two-run deficit when Story battled through a full count and finally launched a changeup into the left-center bullpens.

Lee made history by becoming the sixth player in Twins history to homer from both sides of the plate in a single game.
