Robinson, Falcons Dominate Vikings with Ground Game and Relentless Defense
MINNEAPOLIS, MN — Bijan Robinson returned to form on Sunday, and so did the Atlanta Falcons.
Robinson ran for 143 yards on 22 carries, leading Atlanta to a convincing 22-6 win over the Minnesota Vikings. Georgia native Parker Romo was perfect in his Falcons debut, drilling five field goals, while the defense overwhelmed rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy with six sacks and three takeaways.
Tyler Allgeier added 67 yards on 13 carries, capping the night with a late touchdown as the Falcons (1-1) controlled the clock and tempo, wearing down a shorthanded Vikings defense. Despite the effort, Minnesota’s offense struggled to cross midfield, managing only one trip inside the red zone.
“For us to be balling like that throughout the whole game, it was pretty cool to see,” said Robinson, who helped keep the heat off rookie QB Michael Penix Jr. and quieted the Minneapolis crowd early.
Penix went 13 of 21 for 135 yards and continued his turnover-free start to the season.
“He’s selfless. He’ll do whatever it takes to win, which is exactly what he did tonight,” said Falcons coach Raheem Morris.
Behind a fired-up offensive line, Robinson and Allgeier powered a 12-play, 83-yard drive that chewed over six minutes off the clock late in the game. The strong outing was a bounce-back for Robinson, who was held to just 24 yards on the ground in last week’s loss to Tampa Bay.
On the other side, McCarthy—playing his first game as a father and second career NFL start—struggled mightily. The No. 12 overall pick (taken two spots behind Penix in the 2024 draft) threw two interceptions and lost a fumble.
“We’ve got a lot to do, and I’ve got a lot to do personally,” McCarthy admitted postgame.
Despite pregame buzz, a prime-time slot, and a halftime ceremony honoring Hall of Famer Jared Allen, the Vikings (0-2) failed to deliver. The crowd roared early when McCarthy hit Justin Jefferson for 50 yards on a slick double-move that set up a field goal before halftime, cutting Atlanta’s lead to 9-6. But it was all downhill from there.
Minnesota’s offense sputtered, and injuries piled up. Center Ryan Kelly and left tackle Justin Skule both exited with concussions, while running back Aaron Jones left in the third quarter with a hamstring injury. Already missing key starters like Christian Darrisaw and Harrison Smith, the Vikings couldn’t keep up.
First-round picks Jalon Walker and James Pearce Jr. each tallied first-half sacks as Atlanta’s revamped pass rush took over. It was the Falcons’ most sacks in a half since 2009. Rookie defensive backs Billy Bowman Jr. and Xavier Watts added interceptions, with Watts sealing the game by picking off McCarthy’s final desperation throw.
“We’re hungry,” said Watts. “We’re just doing our thing.”
Romo, a late-week signing to replace the injured Younghoe Koo, didn’t miss a beat. The Peachtree City native, who had a brief stint with Minnesota last season, calmly nailed all five of his attempts.
“It’s crazy that I know more of their guys than I do our guys, but that’s my homework,” Romo joked.
One bright spot for the Vikings: With his 9-yard catch in the first quarter, Justin Jefferson tied Larry Fitzgerald Jr. as the youngest player in NFL history (26 years, 90 days) to reach 500 career receptions.
Injury Report
Falcons: CB A.J. Terrell Jr. exited late in the second quarter with a left hamstring injury and did not return.
Vikings: C Ryan Kelly and LT Justin Skule both left with concussions. RB Aaron Jones (hamstring) left in the third quarter. S Harrison Smith was again inactive. Backup OLB Gabe Murphy suffered a knee injury in the fourth and is being evaluated for an MCL issue.
