SPRINGFIELD TO CANCEL NIXLE SERVICE

Springfield has used Nixle alert services to alert the community during emergencies since at least 2021.  That was the original idea.  But according to City Manager Amber Dale, in recent years, Nixle has been used for non-emergencies like water main breaks.  Dale said the city’s budget is a top priority and in an effort to reduce expenses, the city will be cancelling their contract with Nixle which she says will save the city approximately $5000 per year.  Dale says major alerts from law enforcement would come through the IPAWS system which is utilized by the Brown County Sheriff’s Office.  She says you don’t need to sign up for that.  She said that the City’s Facebook page is also a good source of information and recommends downloading apps like FEMA or the National Weather Service app to get emergency information.  Springfield’s contract with Nixle will expire March 27.
