Twins Snap Marlins’ Streak Behind Woods Richardson, Lee, and Correa

MIAMI, FL — The Minnesota Twins put an end to the Miami Marlins’ eight-game winning streak with a 2-1 victory Wednesday night, thanks to timely hitting from Brooks Lee and Carlos Correa and a solid outing from starter Simeon Woods Richardson.

The Twins got on the board early, snapping an 18-inning scoreless drought in the first inning. Byron Buxton led off the game with a single off Miami starter Janson Junk, advanced to third on a wild pitch and a Willi Castro single, and scored on a sacrifice fly from Lee.

Kyle Stowers briefly tied the game for Miami in the second with a solo home run off Woods Richardson — his second in as many games and 15th of the season. It marked Stowers’ fifth homer in his last nine games, ending a 31-game drought that followed his two-homer outing against the Cubs on May 14.

Minnesota regained the lead in the fourth. Castro, who finished 3-for-4, opened the frame with a double. Lee and Correa followed with consecutive RBI singles, giving the Twins a 2-1 advantage.

Woods Richardson (4-4) worked five innings, allowing just one run on two hits. Brock Stewart took over in the sixth and got a break when Stowers’ two-out single — which looked like it would tie the game — was ruled dead after glancing off base umpire Emil Jimenez. Jesús Sánchez, who had doubled earlier in the inning, was returned to third base. Stewart struck out Eric Wagaman to preserve the one-run lead.

Minnesota’s bullpen handled the rest. Stewart and three other relievers combined for four shutout innings, and Jhoan Duran closed the door in the ninth for his 13th save in 15 opportunities.

Junk (2-1), making his third straight start after working out of the bullpen earlier this season, pitched well despite the loss. He allowed two runs on six hits over six innings, striking out seven.

The Marlins threatened again in the seventh, loading the bases against Danny Coulombe. Otto Lopez nearly tied it with a deep fly to left, but it fell just short, and Harrison Bader made a crucial throw to the plate to nail the potential tying run for the second out of the inning.
