UPDATE – REPRESENTATIVE HORTMAN KILLED, SENATOR HOFFMAN WOUNDED IN SHOOTINGS, PERSON OF INTEREST REPORTEDLY IDENTIFIED
UPDATE – Multiple sources are reporting law enforcement have identified a person of interest in the killings of Representative Hortman and her husband early Saturday morning. Authorities say they are searching for 57-year-old Vance Luther Boelter. Law enforcement say that the suspect in the shootings was found leaving the Hortman’s home shortly after 3:30 am, exchanged gunfire and fled on foot. Authorities found a manifesto in the suspect’s vehicle with a list of targeted names, which allegedly included other high-ranking Minnesota political figures. The hunt for Boelter continues and no other information has been released.
Original story – One state lawmaker was killed and another wounded in overnight shootings in what Governor Walz called a “politically motivated assassination.” Democratic State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark were both killed at their home in Brooklyn Park. Democratic Senator John Hoffman Yvette were shot and wounded at their home in Champlin. Both Hoffmans survived and are listed in stable condition. At a press conference Saturday morning, the victims were shot by a suspect impersonating a police officer conducting a welfare check to gain entry into both homes. The suspect used false credentials and was dressed in tactical gear. He remains at large and the FBI and Department of Homeland Security are involved. Authorities say no motive has been confirmed but that both lawmakers had received threats in recent months. Authorities also say they have reportedly recovered a manifesto belonging to the suspect with names of other lawmakers. More details will be released as they become available.
