Volunteers being sought
Lake Bronson — The Minnesota Historical Society is seeking volunteers for what hey are referring to as a “Once-In-A-Generation” Archaeological Survey.
According to a news release, while the water levels at Lake Bronson are low during the on-going construction to replace the dam in Lake Bronson State Park, the Minnesota Historical Society, Department of Natural Resources and Kittson County Historical Society are looking for volunteers to assist professional archaeologists to survey the lake basin for archaeological sites.
Archaeologists are interested in identifying and researching sites exposed within the lake basin, including sites dating thousands of years to remnants of the Works Progress Administration Camp to build the Lake Bronson dam in 1936.
Volunteers will get an up-close opportunity to join a pedestrian (walk0ver) survey with archaeologists by hiking through areas that are typically underwater. No previous experience necessary, just the ability to walk through the basin on uneven terrain for two hours at a time.
Volunteer shifts will be scheduled throughout July and August, and volunteers will be asked to commit to 8 hours, or more, throughout the summer.
Training will be provided prior to the archaeological surveys. Individuals, educational and community groups are invited to sign-up. All ages are welcome.
Sign-up is available through the Minnesota Historical Society.
