Warren Breaks Drought as Yankees Power Past Twins 6-2

NEW YORK, NY — Will Warren delivered a standout performance Monday night, becoming the first New York Yankees starter in a month to record an out in the seventh inning, helping lead the Yankees to a 6-2 victory over the Minnesota Twins.

Warren (7-5) held Minnesota to three hits and two runs across 6 2/3 innings, striking out seven without issuing a walk. The right-hander allowed solo home runs to Byron Buxton and Trevor Larnach but otherwise kept the Twins at bay before handing the ball to relievers Luke Weaver and David Bednar, who closed out New York’s 23rd win in their last 30 regular-season matchups against Minnesota.

The last Yankees starter to reach the seventh inning was Carlos Rodón, who pitched eight innings against the Chicago Cubs on July 11.

Monday’s win also marked the Yankees’ first series-opening victory since the All-Star break.

Cody Bellinger, Giancarlo Stanton, and Ben Rice all homered off Twins starter Zebby Matthews (3-4), who allowed three runs on six hits over 5 2/3 innings. Despite striking out nine, Matthews tied a career high by surrendering three home runs.

Bellinger ended a 12-game home run drought with a solo shot in the first inning. In the third, Stanton and Rice went back-to-back — the eighth time this season the Yankees have hit consecutive homers.

Stanton’s homer, his 10th in the past 25 games, was his first while playing the field since August 3, 2023. Rice followed with a solo blast to right field, continuing his solid rookie campaign.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. added a solo home run for the Twins in the eighth inning, but it wasn’t enough to overcome a four-homer night by the Yankees, who are now 10-3 this season when hitting at least four home runs in a game.

Trent Grisham and Aaron Judge each delivered RBI singles during a two-run seventh that padded New York’s lead.

Warren was one strike away from completing seven full innings before Larnach’s homer ended his outing.

Up Next:
Carlos Rodón (11-7, 3.35 ERA) is set to start Tuesday for the Yankees, while the Twins are expected to go with a bullpen game.
