William (Bill) Schmitz

On Tuesday, June 17, 2025, William (Bill) Schmitz age 83, passed away peacefully at St. Francis Regional Hospital with family at his side.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, June 26 at Ballard Sunder Funeral in Shakopee (833 Marschall Road) from 10:00 until 12:00 followed by a celebration of life starting at 12:00 PM. Bill will be laid to rest at Shakopee Catholic Cemetery.

Bill was born on July 17, 1941, to Jacob and Leora (Stemmer) Schmitz, he entered the world on the family farm and remained there until his death. As the sixth of twelve children, he grew up surrounded by loving siblings, nieces and nephews. His many neighbors were like family. Bill had the support of a large farming community where everyone helped everyone. Known for his remarkable memory, never forgetting a birthday or a story shared. He knew the names, lives, and hearts of everyone around him, and he carried them all with him every day.

The land meant so much to Bill, he devoted his life to the farm. He lived simply but richly, with priorities that never wavered: land to work, animals to care for, chores to complete, and people to love. Bill was a warm, gentle and compassionate man. His world was one of simple joys and deep commitment to his family, neighbors and friends, and the legacy of the farm.

Survivors include sisters, Barb Kohout, Bernie Johnston, Mary (John) Scanlon, Cathy Klehr, Rose (Gene) Acklie and Arlene (Jim) Rosckes; sister-in-law, Peggy Schmitz. Many nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death are his parents, Jacob and Leora; brothers, Paul, Kenny and Bob; sisters, Bet’s Farrell and Marge Corwin; sisters-in-law, Gerry Schmitz and Debbie Schmitz; brothers-in-law, Romie Kohout, Leroy Farrell, Roger Corwin and Ken Klehr.
